Metabolism: The website links below contain exercises and practice questions on the various topics on metabolism that we have studied so far. Visit each website and follow the instructions I have provided below. I. Diet Analysis Access the following site: www.nat.uiuc.edu and click on the NAT Tool 2.0 on the left hand side. Enter the required information to conduct an analysis of the foods you consumed within a one day period. Compare that to the U.S. RDA values on the handout you were given on Tues. in lab. If you don't have your sheet, access the NIH page below. (Note: you will need to enter "something" into the box in step 2 in order to get a list of foods along with approximate serving sizes. Choose the most similar food when conducting your analysis.)
The National Institutes of Health Office of Dietary Supplements http://ods.od.nih.gov/health.aspx The website contains links to lists of RDA's as well as information on the uses of a variety of dietary supplements.
II. Respiration/Photosynthesis/Enzyme Activity Access the following site: http://www.biology.arizona.edu/biochemistry/biochemistry.html It contains practice questions on a variety of the topics we have discussed in class so far. Click on some of the topics and work through the multiple choice questions to test your understanding. There are interactive tutorials that explain the answers to each question along the way.
III. Glycolysis Access the following sites: http://biotech.icmb.utexas.edu/glycolysis/glycohome.html http://www.jonmaber.demon.co.uk/glyintro/ Read through the information provided to further familiarize yourself with the process of glycolysis. These websites may be helpful in reviewing the material we covered in lecture.
IV. Chemistry of Autumn Colors http://scifun.chem.wisc.edu/chemweek/fallcolr/fallcolr.html This website provides an explanation of what happens to the pigments of leaves during Fall months, causing the leaves to change colors.
