Extra Credit Information
Note: All of the extra credit assignments described below are worth up to 10
points each, and are due on Tuesday, May 30. I will not accept late assignments.
You may earn a total of 30 points in extra credit. You may turn in only
one assignment under each category. Feel free to contact me or talk to me
in class if you have any questions about any of these assignments.
1. Prepare a Phylogeny
Draw/write out a phylogeny that includes all the groups we discuss in
lecture/lab grouped correctly within the appropriate
kingdom/phylum/subphylum/class/order (the details for each grouping will vary
depending on the level of detail that we covered it in class. For example,
we will only look at insect and mammalian orders in this course). Clearly indicate
which sub-groupings belong under larger levels of classification.
2. Marine Fishery Report
Write a 2 page report (typed, double-spaced) on the problems associated with a marine
fishery. Pick a fish (or two) from the "Avoid" list on the
Seafood
Watch brochure and conduct an online search for information about the
problems associated with that fishery. The website URL listed on that
brochure is a good starting point for your research since it provides
interesting and useful information about various fishery issues. Your
report may be longer than two pages; if you find a lot of interesting
information about a particular topic, don't feel like you need to restrict
yourself to two pages.
3. Prepare a Lab Study Guide
During labs #11, 12 and 13 and 16, you will be dissecting an earthworm,
a clam, a starfish, a crayfish and a frog. Those of you who are proficient with a
digital camera may photograph the dissections in class using your camera, then
create a labeled, Powerpoint presentation of these images. I will show an
example of this type of presentation in class. If you wish to do this
assignment, but need help creating a Powerpoint presentation, I am happy to
provide you with guidance.
4. Lecture Topic Paper
Write a 2 page report (typed, double-spaced) on a topic presented in
lecture. For example, this may be a topic that I introduced in lecture but
did not go into detail, and you wish to research it further. Or it may be
based on a student question that I did not answer fully in class. You must have
the topic approved by me first.
5. Field Trip Paper
During the class field trip, you will be asked to complete a handout. You
may also write a 2 page (typed, double-spaced) report on any of the displays you
saw, and that were not included on the handout. Refer to the field
trip handout for more details.
6. Use of the Biology Computer Lab
Every time you use the Biology Computer Lab (in L-211) you are required to
log in using your student ID#. At the end of the semester I receive a
printout of which students used the computer lab and how many hours they logged
in. If you use the computer lab for at least 10 hours this semester, you
will receive 10 extra credit points. Please keep in mind that you may work
on any biology related subject in the computer lab to receive this credit.
In other words, you can work on one of the the other extra credit assignments
listed above, or complete your online homework in the computer lab, and receive credit for both the assignment as
well as for using the computer lab.
I may occasionally take the whole class to the computer lab to demonstrate an
assignment, etc. Your computer lab hours will not be included in these
circumstances. In other words, you will need to spend 10 hours outside of
our regular class time in order to earn the extra credit points.
