Bio Sci 130 Paper (40 points):

The final draft of your paper is due Thursday, Dec. 4 in class.  The paper should have the following components:

1. 3 page, typed, double-spaced paper

2. includes at least 3 published journal articles as references

3. includes any website sources that you found at the beginning of the semester related to your topic (Mini Project #2) and still feel is useful to include

4. contains a bibliography section, which should list:

the author, article title, publication date and volume # of each published reference used

the URL and any author/date/affiliation information the websites that you cited contains

bibliography should be on a separate page (not part of the 3 page assignment)

5. Today's assignment:

get together with your group members and decide if any adjustments in topic is necessary (if a group member has dropped the class, for example) - I have a list of all the groups and their topic information; ask me if you don't remember.

access the campus library online database site

the two most useful databases will probably be "CQ Researcher" and "Issues & Controversies", but you may also be able to find some relevant CA related statistics on the RAND California database.

access these databases by using the passwords given to you

browse the databases and search for articles that are relevant to your topic (use keywords to search) - skim read them to find the ones that would be most appropriate for your paper.

list the citation information of 3 articles that you will use in your paper

write a 1 paragraph summary of each article  - remember to paraphrase the information, don't copy down sentences from the article - I will check for plagiarism when you turn in your paper.  The best strategy for avoiding plagiarism is to summarize without looking at the article, then go back and double check the accuracy of the info you summarize.  See the plagiarism page for more info and tips on this subject.

show me the 3 citations and summaries before you leave today - you will hold onto this information and include it in the Final Draft of your paper.

feel free to ask me if you have any questions or would like further guidance on this assignment.

Good luck!
