Bio 130 – Evaluating and Researching Online Resources:

1. Access the site: www.dhmo.org and read through some of the posted information.

a. What is DHMO?

b. Would you support a ban of the use of DHMO on the COC campus?  Why/why not?

2. Access the Environmental Protection Agency’s website at: http://www.epa.gov/epahome/topics.html

Some of the topics covered by EPA include the following broad categories:

1) Air: air quality, air pollutants, ozone depletion, global warming, etc.

2) Water: water quality, water pollutants, aquatic ecosystems, etc.

3) Ecosystems: endangered species, biological diversity, habitat restoration, etc.

4) Waste: waste disposal, recycling programs, landfills, etc.

5) Pesticides: pest management, pesticide types, pesticide effects, etc.

6) Human Health: food safety, health hazards, exposure, etc.

A. Browse through the various topics and visit some of the websites listed for each category.  Narrow your search down to one general topic that really interests you and read through the information posted on websites related to that topic.  Write down the URL’s of websites you find useful.

Tips for a successful online research:

- start off by visiting the sites listed on the EPA website

- follow any links posted on those sites by right-clicking on the link and opening them in a new window (this helps prevent you from losing your original place and having to backtrack a lot)

- evaluate the websites you visit to determine the credibility and reliability of the posted information.  (i.e. is the author trying to “sell” you his idea or is the information more objective?, is the source authoritative or does the website belong to a sixth grade science class?, etc.)

- try to determine how current and up-to-date the posted information is (is there a publication date?)

- conduct a general search on a search engine (i.e. google) with keywords related to your topic to expand your search

B. Based on the information you find, identify the following in writing:

- what is/are the main issues related to your topic

- is it a controversial/complicated issue?  If so, in what way, if not, why not?

- what are the proposed solutions to the problem and how are they being implemented?
